Velvet is a gorgeous fabric that oozes a luxurious tactile femininity. Because of its unusual softness and appearance as well as its high cost of production, velvet has often been associated with nobility.
Before you rush out to the shops, as with any trend - you may well find you already own a piece of velvet clothing.
Velvet used to be very expensive and was predominantly made from silk. However, modern manufacturing and an availability of cheaper fabrics such as rayon, cotton or viscose mean that it is much cheaper to produce than it once was. This is great news for anyone looking to update their wardrobe on a budget.
The key to wearing this trend will be dictated by confidence, body shape and personality. The more flamboyant may chose to mix patterned fabrics or colours, whereas if you are more conservative, you will probably feel more comfortable adding a little nod to the trend, such as a pair of shoes or cute clutch bag.
Velvet is incredibly versatile and can easily take you from day to evening. A cute velvet jacket can be teamed with denim or a pretty dress for a relaxed yet smart look, but for when more effort is needed, you can slip on a pair of sparkly heels and glitzy jewellery and your look is transformed.
Because velvet is texture rich, it can add volume. Therefore, I would advise wearing velvet on slimmer parts of your body. If you are a pear shape – wear a velvet jacket, whereas if you are an apple body shape, slim fitting velvet trousers will look amazing. If you are more than a little body conscious and hide in black, then why not add a gorgeous pop of colour and opt for velvet shoes in one of this seasons beautiful jewel colours.
Despite being luxurious, your really can keep the look casual and practical. This gorgeous patterned velvet skirt from White Stuff would look fabulous, layered with a chunky sweater, thick scarf and boots for an autumnal woodland walk.
Velvet trousers are a great alternative to skinny jeans and can be worn with a cozy sweater for daytime glamour or dressed up with a satin top and sparkly heels for full on evening fabulousness.
I hope you enjoy looking and feeling fabulous and confident this season, please get in touch with any questions.
Much love
